A walk-off left Derry Varsity Trojans on the wrong end of an 8-7 defeat to Mt. Pleasant Varsity Vikings on Thursday at Derry Area High School. The game was tied at seven in the bottom of the seventh when Levi Hixon singled of of the umpires body scoring one run.
Derry Varsity Trojans lost despite out-hitting Mt. Pleasant Varsity Vikings 11 to nine. John Wasnick led Derry Varsity Trojans with three hits.
The Trojans got on the board in the top of the first inning after Max Doherty singled down the left field line, and Mt. Pleasant committed an error, each scoring one run.
Mt. Pleasant flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs on three hits to take the lead, 5-2. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Quinn Painter following a 8-pitch at-bat that drove in two.
Derry tied the game in the top of the second thanks to a double by Wasnick, and a single by Anthony Sacco.
A ground out by Painter gave Mt. Pleasant the lead, 6-5, in the bottom of the third.
Sacco grounded into a double play, which helped the Trojans tie the game at six in the top of the fourth.
Mt. Pleasant took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Cole Chatfield lined out, scoring one run, to give Mt. Pleasant the lead, 7-6.
Cayden Mccune grounded out, which helped Derry tie the game at seven in the top of the fifth.
Doherty pitched six innings in relief for Derry . The righty allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) while, striking out one and walking four. Jayden Struble began the game for Derry Trojans. The left-handed pitcher surrendered three hits and five runs (zero earned) over two-thirds of an inning, striking out one and walking three. Jordan Grieff stepped on the mound first for Mt. Pleasant . The right-handed pitcher gave up 10 hits and seven runs (six earned) over five innings, striking out two and walking three.
Derry Varsity Trojans accumulated 11 hits in the game. Sacco led the Trojans with two runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-3 on the day. Parker Petrosky and Doherty each collected multiple hits for Derry Trojans. The Trojans turned two double plays in the game.
Mt. Pleasant piled up nine hits in the game. Chatfield and Grieff each collected two hits for Vikings. Painter and Hixon were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for Mt. Pleasant. Mt. Pleasant Vikings had a strong eye at the plate, tallying seven walks for the game. Carter Strayer and Hixon led the team with two free passes each. Mt. Pleasant turned two double plays in the game.
Derry will travel to Valley for their next game on Monday.
