Both teams were strong on the mound on Monday, but the Derry Trojans defeated Highlands 1-0. Max Doherty started the game for Derry and recorded 20 outs.
Derry didn't take the lead until later in the game. The game was tied at zero in the top of the fifth when Anthony Sacco singled, scoring one run.
Doherty earned the win for Derry. The starter gave up five hits and zero runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out eight and walking two. Troy Bielak took the loss for Highlands. The starting pitcher went four and two-thirds innings, surrendering one run on six hits, striking out four and walking one. Cason Long collected the save.
Sacco led the Trojans with one run batted in. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-3 on the day. Mason Fridley went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Derry in hits.
Kristian Kocon went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Highlands in hits. Highlands turned one double play in the game.
The Trojans play at home on Tuesday against Highlands in their next game.
