Cason Long drove in four runs on two hits to lead Derry Varsity Trojans past Greensburg Salem 9-0 on Wednesday. Long doubled in the second inning, scoring two runs, and singled in the third inning, scoring two.
Derry Trojans won thanks in part to five runs in the second inning. Anthony Sacco drew a walk, scoring one run, John Wasnick hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, Long doubled, scoring two runs, and Collin Barkley singled, scoring one run.
The Trojans were the first to get on the board in the first when Max Doherty singled, scoring one run.
Derry extended their early lead with three runs in the bottom of the third thanks to RBI singles by Wasnick and Long.
Jayden Struble earned the win for the Trojans. The hurler allowed three hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out six and walking three. Ayden Crissman took the loss for Greensburg Salem. The starting pitcher went one inning, allowing five runs (three earned) on two hits, striking out one and walking four. Long tossed two innings of scoreless ball for Derry in relief. The hurler allowed one hit, striking out three and walking two.
Wasnick and Long were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for Derry while hitting back-to-back. Derry had patience at the plate, amassing eight walks for the game. Mason Fridley and Parker Petrosky led the team with two free passes each. Petrosky stole two bases. Derry stole four bases in the game. The Trojans turned two double plays in the game.
Tyler Martin, Brody Chismar, Peyton Chismar, and Dom Rosensteel each collected one hit for Greensburg Salem.
