At the Butler Invitational last Thursday, Derry Area competed against over 75 other schools and achieved personal bests along the way. However, the highlight of the day was senior Sophia Mazzoni, who won the event with her first throw of 160 feet, 10 inches. With this throw, she is now the #1 ranked thrower in the state and #3 in the entire country. On the girls' side, senior Julia Omlor achieved season bests in the 100 and 200; senior Jane Huss ran her season best in the 800; senior Mikah Horwat ran a personal best in the 2-mile; freshman Maizy Mikeska recorded a personal best in the long jump; sophomore Molly Ray achieved a personal best in the triple jump; and sophomore Zoe Frayvolt threw a new personal best in the javelin. On the boys' side, senior Gabriel Gess had an impressive day, hitting season bests in the 100, 200, and 400; sophomore Haydan Hood ran a personal best in the mile; senior Logan Corbett ran a personal best in the 2-mile; senior Timothy Miller achieved a season best in the 300-meter hurdles; and sophomore Aiden Piper threw a personal best in the discus. The next meet is a senior meet on Monday against Indiana.
